What are the benefits of a Mental Health Care Plan?

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or not quite yourself, you’re definitely not alone. Life has a way of piling things on, and sometimes having the right support can make a real difference. One option many people don’t realise they have access to is a Mental Health Care Plan.

A Mental Health Care Plan is organised through your GP and is designed to help you access psychological support sooner and more affordably.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan is a structured plan created by your GP after a conversation about your mental health and wellbeing. If you’re eligible, it allows you to access rebated psychology sessions through Medicare.

This support is specifically for people seeking psychology services (not all allied health services), and it can significantly reduce the cost of accessing care.

How many sessions can I receive?

If you’re eligible, a Mental Health Care Plan can provide access to up to 10 rebated psychology sessions per calendar year.

Here’s how it works:

  • You’re initially referred for 6 sessions

  • After completing those sessions, you’ll need to return to your GP for a review

  • If appropriate, your GP can then refer you for the remaining 4 sessions

It’s important to note that while Medicare provides a rebate, there is still a gap fee for each session.

When do sessions reset?

The Medicare allowance of up to 10 rebated sessions resets on 1 January each year.
Even if the new year rolls around, you’ll still need:

  • A GP review

  • A new referral

once you’ve finished each block of sessions.

Why consider a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan can:

  • Make psychology services more financially accessible

  • Provide structured, ongoing support

  • Help you build coping strategies, resilience and insight

  • Encourage early support rather than waiting until things feel unmanageable

It’s a practical first step if you’re thinking about seeking help but aren’t sure where to start.
